Excellent machine - kiss the diet goodbye!

Makes the best ice cream you have ever tasted from the simplest ingredients. I've only tried the eggless recipe (just cream, milk, sugar & vanilla extract) and the results are superb. Whack a few extras in (chopped up Ripples & hazelnuts, Raspberry and white chocolate, or tonight's recipe, coconut & chocolate buttons) and you have a tastebud tingling treat.Using the amounts listed in the recipe leaflet, your ice cream will be ready in about 20 minutes. The machine is solid as a rock and very easy to use. You can take the lid off to add ingredients during churning - other machines I've looked at make you add them through a small opening. The only fiddly (OK, impossible!) thing is to take the beater out before you scoop out the ice cream, as recommended in the instructions. With your fingers covered in slippery ice cream you can't get a grip on the thing at all, so I just scoop round the beater until I can a better grip on it.The machine is BIG, so make sure you have enough worktop space, or cupboard space to store it, but be careful about moving it as you have to leave the refrigerant to settle for several hours if it's been moved (12 hours if it hasn't been kept the right way up, as when it was delivered to me upside down.)If you love ice cream you really HAVE to get this machine. And you'll probably have to buy clothes a size larger too!

This is a great machine. It's sturdy, sensible - yet stylish looking - and it's relatively quiet. It's easy to use and you can add bits like nuts and chocolate whilst the paddle is turning. Cleaning is pretty straight forward - though I agree with one of the other reviewers that it's a little fiddly getting the ice-cream coated paddle out without your hands getting completely gooey. Never mind. You now have an excuse to lick them off. Someone has to.A word of warning: don't be tempted to overfill the bowl even though it doesn't look full. 600 ml mixture is the max (this leaves a bit of room for expansion) and the machine will cut out if it has to struggle with much more. I know this from experience. All in all, I'm very satisfied, but fear I will need another freezer to hold all my creations e.g. Banana, blackcurrant, mango and grappa sorbet, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla bean...

I had one of the pre-freeze makers a few years ago but found it difficult to make good ice cream and got fed up having to refreeze the unit every time - no way to make more than one ice cream in a day. But the GAGGIA is superb. After waiting 12 hours to let the refrigerant settle after delivery, I was up making ice cream and had the first batch ready within 30 minutes. Dont believe those that say its very noisy, its pretty reasonable - sounds like a freezer and a mixer together - which is exactly what it is. When the ice cream is ready, if the timer has not already turned the machine off it emits a loud clicking noise as the rotor is prevented from turning by th ice cream. This is a great warning that its ready - and the kids ran to the machine and couldn't wait for their cone to be filled!.It is certainly worth making the recipes as in the Gaggia book supplied - they work perfectly. I've made the chocolate, the caramel and a fresh blackcurrant sorbet - and they were all brilliant. I made a banana ice cream from a recipe that I found on the net, but it wasn't a patch on the Gaggia ones. I'll remake it but this time I'll adapt one of the supplied recipes myself.As it is provided with 2 bowls (one fixed and one removeable, it is easy to get a second batch going while the first one is either served or stored in a food container in the freezer. The removeable bowl is easy to clean, the fixed one a bit more difficult, but after scraping out the ice cream, its nothing that a few dish cloths can't get spotless in a couple of minutes. Note - if you are using the removeable bowl you have to pour some spirit (I used gin!) into the fixed bowl to stop the removeable one from being frozen in place!! A measure is provided - its only about a double.Overall I'm very satisfied with this machine and it will see regular use I'm sure.......Latest update - machine is now a year old, has seen regular use - even through the winter and still looks and works perfectly. This is a good, solid and robust piece of kit - and it makes some great ice creams, sorbets and granitas!
